The Sunday chain gang
Saturday 23rd May 2009, 2:55PM BST.
IT will be a case of ‘two wheels good, four wheels bad’ in town tomorrow as hundreds of cyclists hit the streets for a race.
Car drivers in St Helier are being asked to hang up their keys for the day, with many roads closed for the Rubis Jersey Town Criterium – the first in the Island since 1978.
There will be six different cycle races along the route, which follows streets through St Helier, between 12.10 and 4.15 pm and spectators are invited to line the roads to enjoy the action, with the prime viewing spot being the start/finish line at the Town Hall.
The Constable of St Helier, Simon Crowcroft, has been involved in the event since the idea for the criterium was launched two years ago. ‘A town cycle race is a really good spectator event,’ he said. ‘It’s going to help boost tourism and will generally boost the profile of cycling locally.’
