This is an initiative worth supporting

From John Hutchins.
THE article (JEP, 18 May) on the charity Prison! Me! No way! was most interesting, particularly when seeing that no fewer than 6,000 young people within Jersey were benefiting from this insight into the consequences of crime, alcohol, drink driving and drugs.
Prison ! Me! No way! is a unique and innovative initiative which has positioned itself to access the young people of the Island at grass root level on an awareness basis which can only be of benefit to the Island and should doubtless, in time, help to reduce the numbers of individuals who are placed either on probation, have a drugs issue or those who sadly ultimately end up at La Moye.
It does seems incredible to believe that when the private funding of the charity ends the States will be unable to continue the funding level. It must surely be better to be in a position where prevention is a vastly more attractive proposition than a remedial custody cure, both in terms of time and cost.
The short-term gain by the States in their not funding this initiative will doubtless lead to long-term pain relating to the ultimate costs involved both with medical and custodial rehabilitation.
