THREE luxury houses worth millions at Dandara’s new Portelet Bay development have been sold while still in the planning stage.

This follows news that Dandara have sold 73 per cent of their Castle Quay flats, which will be completed by 2010–2011.

Last week Dandara opened up their Sir Richard MacCormac-designed show home overlooking Portelet Bay and three houses and a penthouse flat sold within three days.

The development caused major controversy last year when Environment Minister Freddie Cohen approved it against Planning officer advice and strong opposition from the National Trust.

Dandara managing director Martin Clancy said: ‘People will see when it is finished it will be exceptional. People that have seen it have been blown away. Using a UK architect adds value to the Island. It speaks for itself. We have spent millions on local consultants – the money goes around. Using a UK architect only adds to the mix and lifts everyone’s standards.’

    Dear Freddie,

Please can you push through my planning application. What I want to do to my property will not upset the national trust and will not blight the island in any way. Is there any chance you can push this through for me? Or do I need to change my name to Dan O’Dara to get this level of priveledge?

would love to see a list of the ‘Local Consultant’s’ used for the project. would make you think that there are no local architects or structural / M&E consultants on the island

I work in an architects practice and think it is appalling that they would even think of using UK architects, who knows this Island best, it’s LOCAL workmen or ignorant UK conglomerates who are out to squash the little people? We should be celebrating LOCAL talent, not hindering it! Way to go Freddie!

The Portelet Dandara scheme is wrong. How can a set of buildings that resembles pretty much any contemporary architecture be outstandingly special? how come UK architecture is so special? Do tourists come to the island to see UK architecture? No. They come here for Jersey. The wider area has to be considered here – not what is most likely to sell. What is wrong with such schemes is the over zealousness for the classic ‘world renowned architecture’. Come on, I know I haven’t seen the buildings inside, but I’ve seen them from a boat out at sea, and they stick out like a sore thumb. Any prominent building’s appearance should also be viewed from a wider perspective and not just from the front elevation of the architect’s plan. This is not something that really benefits the area. it’s 1 for grandois schemes, and Nil to Jersey as a whole.

People, I have said it before, Freddie uses (sorry the developer strangely uses) big name UK architects for 2 reasons, 1 to massage Freddies ego 2 so Freddie can say well if they say it is good and they are a world renowned architect who am i to say its not, look at all the stuff going on, waterfront, North of St Helier, even the new Checkers (not yet built) had a SIR someone or another to keep him happy.

Local firms are “partners” at best and thats just to keep the locals happy, its an insult and the sooner Freddie admits it the better, but he won’t of course!

and the scary bit, I bet he is our next Chief Minister!!

I very much doubt that, Pip Ozouf is on an inside track as Deputy Chief Minister and Treasury Minister plus he has a solid block of support in the present CoM.

Pip, I hear what you are saying but trust me, Cohen has inside support and he will run for Chief Minister, mind you neither of them are good candidates!

Ozouf is our next chief minister not Freddie. As far as I am concerned they are built in the wrong place and are of inconsistant materials to what one would expect in Jersey.

At that price I would be expecting a granite build or at least clad in granite. If planning think this makes Jersey look good then we might as well give up as far as I am concerned.

Another example of the UK knows best what good for Jersey in my opinion.

Phillip Ozouf will still have three years on his Senatorial term after the next election so no need to face the voters unless there has been States reform, a possibility but a remote one.
Freddie Cohen will have to face the voters at the next Senatorial elections and I really do not think that his reign at Planning and Environment has made him sufficent friends to score a place in the top six so I doubt he will get a chance to run for Chief Minister.
