Fort Regent needs to have champion, says minister

Thursday 28th May 2009, 2:58PM BST.

Matt435THE Planning Minister believes that a ‘project champion’ needs to be found to drive forward a vision for Fort Regent – but he does not believe that he is the man for the job.

Senator Freddie Cohen was one of a number of witnesses who met the Education and Home Affairs Scrutiny panel yesterday as part of their review of the site.

The minister told the panel that he believed a politician needed to drive a plan for the venue forward and then take it to the States.

‘I think that there is an absence of a project champion who is prepared to prioritise and say “this is what I believe the vision for the Fort is”. At the moment nothing concrete is happening and it needs someone to take it forward,’ said Senator Cohen.

‘At the moment there are 50-odd States Members with 50-odd different views on the future of Fort Regent.’

Panel member Deputy Montfort Tadier asked the minister whether he would consider taking the project on, but Senator Cohen said that it would not have been feasible.

Sorry Ole, we are fresh out of UK consultants, cheap or expensive. Maybe the States Chamber should elect an underemployed Deputy? We could then all sit back and take bets on the odds on the Ministry of Fort Regent outliving Health Minister. Pointless; but fun.

What to do? Well, why not put out a design competition to local, UK and International Architects. Many designers are looking for work and the carrot of a competition with a prize of , say, £30,000 will be cheaper than employing one UK or local consultant and the Island gets many schemes. Some designers will not know the Island and maybe that’s a good thing, to generate fresh innovative ideas and concepts.

I remember when Fort Regent consisted of practically nothing other than a tenanted cottage or two… then came the development which soon outgrew its popularity. A futuristic low cost overheads venue should be envisaged. Combining swimming activities that should be used by all schools and clubs, open to the public and with modern facilities.A decent dining area, other such activities that could be utilised off season, an education centre with PC learning facilities perhaps with an internet cafe. There is room for both sports and general entertainment facilities to suit both the visitor and the Island populace.
The Island could also integrate other learning facilities to include agriculture. Come on think about what this unique and valuable assett could be used for.
