Former deputy police chief Lenny Harper

Former deputy police chief Lenny Harper

FORMER deputy Police Chief Lenny Harper has been cleared of all internal charges against him.

Investigations into Mr Harper – who retired from the States of Jersey Police a year ago – began after former officers and associates claimed he carried out ‘witch-hunts’ against them, and that he bullied some of them out of the force.

But Mr Harper says that the States of Jersey Police have written to him saying that he had been cleared of all the allegations after a lengthy investigation, and that the inquiries are over.

He said that there had been five complainants in total, four former policemen and tow truck operator Roy Boschat. ‘All have now been found unsubstantiated or vexatious,’ said Mr Harper.

Where are all the pro-establishment supporters now then?

They could always try the cover up angle couldn’t they? Oh no they can’t, because they don’t believe in cover ups do they?

Not before time too – let’s get Mr Power back where he belongs, doing the job he wants to do.

    Congratulations Lenny.

This is the price you paid for attempting to ‘clean up’ the SOJP. I bet it has left a very bad taste.

So when will Mr Harper receive an apology from the States of Jersey for the vilification he has endured?

When will Graham Power have some resolution of his situation?

I agree with poster #1 Mr Warcop must go, didn’t he by innuendo suggest that Lennie Harper was bullying police officers (now clearly discredited)?

And why didn’t the States of Jersey release this information? Lennie Harper himself seems to have informed the press. Surely the States should be delighted to announce that a previous senior police officer was cleared of what now appear to be malicious, vexatious allegations?

If there was a cover up, or a conspiracy, surely they would have found Mr Harper in the wrong?

This simply demonstrates to me justice in action – Mr Harper was accused, and has now been cleared.

Mr. Harper’s media strategy was a bit ‘iffy’, to say the least. What was he trying to achieve by giving out so much information to the press? One ex-senior police officer I spoke to thought it might be a tactic to flush out other suspects, but I think ex-Deputy Chief Officer Harper should have been more circumspect. He should have had the forensic results before going to the media about the supposed skull fragment. Maybe sometime in the future we will see his memoirs and we will get an idea of what was on his mind.

On the issue of the supposed ‘witch hunt’; if he has been cleared of any wrong doing, doesn’t this suggest that there were a lot of problems with SoJP and he was just doing his job too root out corruption?

Let’s hope the police can now move forward and do the job they are supposed to; prevent crime and disorder and bring offenders to justice.

From my experience, Jersey has a far better criminal justice than many other locations in the world, including parts of the U.K.

Now is the time to stop all the sniping and let the cops get on with their job – to do otherwise is just churlish.

seems to me that, given the lack of prosecutions, (bar one case), that he has indeed presided over one of the biggest wastes of police time and money in history.

Not to mention the damage to the islands reputation. Remember the murders, rapes, abuse, violence, toture chambers ….. sorry state of affairs!

The establishment targeted the wrong scape goat. Truth wins at the end of the day and in the modern world Jersey can’t hush everything up. Terrible things happened in the past which can’t be changed but it is how the government and the society of today react that makes the difference and how we can keep our heads up high. Sadly things haven’t been handled well in the here and now and that is what makes it all the more shameful.
For all of you that are moaning on about LH’s handling of the affair – no smoke without fire – there are witnesses – no prosecutions – well this was an establishment that thought it was perfectly fine for Roger Holland to become an honoury – heh what does a bit of child abuse matter when you are representing the law in Jersey?

‘Q’ is right, the establishment let Roger Holland survive in the Honorary Police. There were a number of other incidents that were mishandled by the ‘Old Boy’ network….I know because I had first hand experience of what occurred whilst I served in the States Police’s Child Protection Team. Yet every time I endeavoured to raise the subject with the authorities, they just wanted to brush it under the carpet. Lenny Harper’s sin was to challenge the establishment, yet still nothing has been done to bring the wrong doers to account. Some members of the so called Island’s elite are very arrogant and believe they know better and discount what others tell them.

In my mind the Roger Holland affair was never satisfactorily closed. I am waiting for SS to take up the torch, maybe he could make all the evidence ineligible and save the bacon of those in the wrong ?

    Marks perspective

I fear that some of the above pro-Harper comment missed the point. The police complaint that Lenny Harper was cleared of had nothing to do with child abuse investigations, nor, anything to do the pro-establishment or anti-establishment crossfire. I believe the complaint was related to tow trucks.

By all means give Mr Harper your support, but it must be realized that ill considered support will do more harm than good.
