Penny wise, pound foolish?
Thursday 28th May 2009, 3:00PM BST.
From Malcolm Ray.
RECENTLY I read in the JEP that the gold-plated incinerator is likely to cost an extra £3 million to £10 million due to the exchange rate of the pound against the euro.
Over £1 million for the suspension of the police chief and Hospital employees in expenses to the Treasury.
£600,000 in payment to investors who were misled in policies that were sold to them.
And the latest, a £700,000 payout for a Planning mistake.
None of this seems to matter to the Council of Ministers. But when it comes to funding school milk or redundant Woolworth workers’ compensation, for example, then suddenly they are worried about the use of taxpayers’ money and that it could set a precedent.
How ironic, that millions can be wasted but there is a debate to be had when it involves thousands.
Finally, the people responsible for the overspends are rarely made accountable. However, public sector workers are threatened with a pay freeze, while personnel at the top are usually rewarded for their mistakes with a huge payoff and maybe even a bonus.
It is a sad reflection when they become untouchable while ordinary public sector workers are having to pay for these mistakes and expenses with a pay freeze.
