CONCERN that many Islanders will not benefit from new laws designed to give more protection to tenants has been expressed by the manager of the Jersey Citizens’ Advice Bureau.

Last week it was announced that proposals had been lodged for a States debate on new legislation to increase protection for tenants who have housing qualifications.

But bureau manger Francis Le Gresley believes that many who rent properties may discover that they will not be able to benefit from enhanced protections, such as longer notice-to-quit periods.

He said that it was his understanding that existing leases would be exempt from the legal requirements if they are offered for renewal without any variations to the current provisions.

“For tenants with qualifications” as usual anyone without quals is treated as a second class citizen but gets no concession when paying taxes etc. This from a bunch of politicians who fiddled the UK out of vast sums of money for several year, and we think there politicians are bad.

Sorry Reg, I have quals. live in a flat with parcel tape over the broken windows, well water that corrodes everything it comes in contact with, broken guttering that allows water into my flat in the winter and a fire I cannot use as the flue is broken and smoke pours into my neighbour’s flat, so no heating. So please don’t think just because you have quallies it is all goodness and light – far from it !!!!

Why noy move then there are loads of quallies places. I have just got mine and the price is a lot lower now than when unquallified. Reg is spot on with his comments and it makes me sick to my stomach how people are treated by the goverment. Ordinary jersey folk are good people at heart and many agree it is wrong. I had to laugh that de Klerk was over here looking to sign jersey up to help with human rights issues around the world. He obviously did not do his homework…There is no excuse. and those that say the next boat out can go jump.
