States to debate delaying Waterfront development
Friday 29th May 2009, 2:57PM BST.
A FORMAL proposal to delay the £350 million redevelopment of the St Helier Waterfront for years has been tabled for debate by the States.
The motion was lodged today by Deputy Phil Rondel who wants fellow politicians to agree to halt development of the proposed Esplanade Quarter and the sinking of the Route de la Libération until there is a ‘significant improvement’ in the economic situation.
‘Many Islanders have serious concerns as to where Jersey will find itself in the next three to five years, so now is not the time to move forward on developing the sunken road or building the Esplanade Quarter,’ he said.
The Deputy said that he made the move now in response to a deadline set by Treasury Minister Philip Ozouf for the preferred developer to show it has the financial muscle to carry out the Waterfront development. Irish-owned Harcourt Developments has been told it has to come up with surety of £95 million by the end of June.

Well done Mr Rondel, Delay is the first stage, cancellation can take place after this as very few locals want to have lots of empty office blocks on the waterfront.

I believe it would be better to forget this folly before it bankrupts the island. What part of no do they not understand?

I happen to support Deputy Rondel’s proposition but just because he lodged a decent motion does not make this otherwise silent member a suitable candidate for chief minister….what a risible idea.
