Remembering Normandy

JERSEY’S D-Day anniversary service, which was held a week earlier than usual because veterans will be in France this weekend, was blessed with beautiful sunshine yesterday morning.

Veterans, dignitaries and members of the public observed a minute’s silence at the Cenotaph in memory of those who died establishing a second front against the Germans in Normandy on 6 June 1944.

Earlier, a bugler from the Band of the Island of Jersey played Last Post to the gathering of about 75 people. The Constable of St Helier, Simon Crowcroft, who laid a wreath on behalf of the parish, said that it was a good turnout and the day went well.

Mr Crowcroft will join the veterans when they commemorate the 65th anniversary in Normandy at the weekend. Lieutenant-Bailiff Jurat Sally Le Brocq filled in for the Bailiff and laid a wreath on behalf of the States.
