Banahan wins England cap
Wednesday 3rd June 2009, 3:00PM BST.
Matt Banahan will become the first Jersey-born male rugby player to win a full senior international cap on Saturday.
Selected for the England Test squad after his try-scoring performance in their non-cap friendly defeat against the Barbarians at Twickenham last Saturday, Bath Rugby’s 22-year-old giant left wing keeps his place for the Test against Argentina at Old Trafford this weekend.
Former Les Quennevais pupil and Siam Cup winner with Jersey RFC, Banahan is one of three new caps in manager Martin Johnson’s side to face the Pumas, who are currently ranked fifth in the World, one ahead of England.
England play Argentina away the following week.

BIRD WATCH 2012

The 11th Great Garden Bird Watch took place over the weekend, Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 February. JEP readers were asked to get on board to help monitor bird life in the Island.

No he won’t. There has been a Jersey born player with their first cap in 1994. Her name is Alison Christie.
First Jersey born male, sure. But not player.

1st MALE. Not 1st player. Jersey born Alison Christie beat him to international honours 15 years ago. Got 61 caps in total.

JEP I think you’re wrong in saying Banahan is “the first Jersey-born rugby player to win a full senior international cap”.
Ali Christie is Jersey born and got her first international cap for the Scotland Senior Women’s team back in 1994 and finally won 61 caps!

I agree with the above – first Jersey player to win full senior international cap at rugby was Alison Christie. Acknowledgement in JEP required methinks!!! Sorry Matt.

I think a new article is needed. Ali Christie is your first full senior international cap. She did it at prop also which is a proper position, unlike the pretty boys out on the wing. Us international props have to stick together.

Fair play to Matt. We will be watching from far away, cheering him on.

Thanks for amending the story from “player” to “male player”. Appreciate it.

I see they’ve updated the article now to include “male” player – nice one Ali!

Well done to Banas, playing for England is a real honour.
However I know of at least 3 male Jersey born full senior internationals.
For arguments sake let’s just say Matt will be the first Male Jersey born player to represent one of the Home Nations.
