Stop the destruction of our country hedges

OH how I agree with Juliet Gillam’s letter (JEP 4 June) regarding the twice-yearly bushwack branchage.

We are being asked to save the indigenous plants and insects in Spring Watch on the Corbière headland, only to do the opposite to our country hedges.

The decimation of plants and insects by the machines shaving the hedges so closely is appalling. Surely there is someone in the States who has the authority to do something about, to quote Juliet, this insidious vandalism.

I have quoted Gerald Durrell’s words before in the JEP, but I think they are worth repeating: ‘We hope that there will be fireflies and glowworms at night to guide you and butterflies in hedges and forests to greet you.’
Do we hope in vain?
