Valentine duo’s date with prison
Wednesday 10th June 2009, 3:00PM BST.
A COUPLE who claimed that they had come to Jersey for a Valentine weekend smuggled thousands of pounds worth of heroin into the Island.
The pair pretended that their visit in February was for a romantic short-break. Instead, they had around £90,000 worth of the class A drug hidden internally.
They were planning to check in at the Mayfair Hotel in St Helier and ‘await further instructions’.
Gavin Ferguson (36) was jailed for six years and his partner, Sonya Moorton (40), for 4½ years after both were sentenced by the Superior Number of the Royal Court on Monday.
Commissioner Julian Clyde-Smith said: ‘The appalling effects that heroin addiction has had on the lives of these two defendants should serve as a stark illustration of evil of this drug and the importance of the court’s having a firm policy on those dealing with it.’
