Island’s first case of swine flu confirmed
Saturday 13th June 2009, 3:00PM BST.
THE first case of swine flu in Jersey was confirmed yesterday.
The patient, who has not been identified, fell ill after returning to the Island from a country with a high number of infections.
Everyone who has been in contact with the patient has been tested and treated and no one is believed to have been infected.
It is not known whether the Islander was treated in hospital, but the JEP understands that he or she is currently recovering at home.
Dr Ivan Muscat, consultant microbiologist at the General Hospital, urged Islanders to maintain good respiratory and hand hygiene to help prevent the virus spreading.

Watch the panic set in if someone dies from swine flu. I would not worry at present as we are not in our flu season. Wait and see in September October and November, we will then know how deadly, or not, this flu is. At present it seems fairly benign, if it should evolve into a more virulent form then anything could happen.

You have to think why is there a possible increase in flu cases during the winter months? Usually because people are indoors more with the heating turned up and therefore an increased chance of being next to someone who sneezes. We generally tend to stay indoors in public places around many other people in close contact. BUT I think with the education about the spread of swine flu people will be more hygeinic and careful if they think they might be infected.

We have 84 positive cases of swine flu here in New Zealand with most of the cases involving school aged and kindy aged children. Tamiflu is given to all suspected and positive cases…..and this seems to be the answer. They are working on a vacine that will be ready by sept. I don’t think we need to panic thou!
