Having a lovely time in the ‘brash’ Channel Island

Mont Orgueil: Part of Jersey's rich history

Mont Orgueil: Part of Jersey's rich history

THE first impression thousands of people are going to get of Jersey is that it is the ‘brashest’ of the Channel Islands.

That is how the new Lonely Planet Great Britain chooses to introduce the Island to those who buy the 1,000-plus-page book. Going to Guernsey, on the other hand, is described as being like ‘falling into a giant flowerbox’ and the guide focuses on ‘picturesque’ St Peter Port.

‘Jersey is the biggest and, its rivals would say, the brashest of the Channel Islands,’ the guide says. ‘Shimmering steel and glass and pinstripe suits set the tone in capital St Helier, an offshore finance centre.

However, as well as highlighting many of its attractions, the guide also says: ‘The coast is 48 miles long; exquisite sandy beaches fringe the south, east and west sides, and rugged cliffs frame the north. Inbetween lie tranquil lanes and some excellent museums, which bring Jersey’s rich history to life.’

No surprises. I remember when St Helier would have received as good a report as St Peter Port. What a shame little thought has gone into designing buildings, over recent years, to fit in with the picturesque instead of trying to out do one another with the most modern looking, regardless of their surroundings.

    Overpopulated

St Helier has been allowed to fester into a town of new, often ugly offices, run down areas, closed shops and populated at night by drunken, drugged rabble. Lovely for locals and visitors alike – a real sink housing estate.

A result of our non existant border controls

Some of the lanes may be attractive but there’s so much traffic you can hardly have a quiet country walk.

Senator Cohen’s policy of encouraging “Modern” architecture is totally ruining the Island, never mind just St Helier. Buildings that are only a few years old look shabby already – not that they looked much better when they were new (the flats on the Lily Langtry site in La Motte Street and the La Coie development are a prime example). Now we’re about to lose the tranquility of Bouley Bay with an Aztec type monstrosity as well.

Nellie, ‘Modern’ Architecture can be beautiful. Unfortunately F Cohen and co don’t seem to have any idea about architecture or aesthetics, and just bring in ‘bad’ architecture. Shame.

    7. Architect – I agree, I actually like the flats on the ex-Behans site as not only is the building aesthetically pleasing to the eye, it also fits into the surroundings.

On the other hand, they passed a similar building in Plat Douet Road and it looks like a chunk of an airport terminal because it simply doesn’t relate to anything in that road.

It does say: “its rivals would say” – well obviously rivals are going to be negative – normally such comments are borne out of envy.
