WHILE England were virtually certain to retain the British team title at Les Creux bowls club in St Brelade this morning, proud hosts Jersey were guaranteed to finish at the bottom of the table.

But, after losing to England by 42 shots in the opening match on Tuesday morning, Jersey’s bowlers improved beyond recognition against Scotland in the afternoon – and their two games yesterday, against Ireland and Wales, could have gone either way.

Jersey have a good record against Ireland, but the Irish have improved over the last few years, so it was a major fillip for home supporters when Jersey took a 34-31 lead after five ends, and powered further ahead by ten ends.

Indeed, at 63-44, Jersey looked poised to win their first match of the series, and to push their opponents into the wooden spoon spot – but it was not to be, because Ireland appeared to find second wind in the second half, and won, 109-101.
