MORE than 1,200 people left the comfort of their beds in the early hours of Saturday to embark on a 48.1 mile walk around Jersey.

The 18th annual Itex Walk started at Elizabeth terminal at 3 am and finished at the Waterfront, and the first person to cross the line, at 11.55 am, was 20-year-old Ryan Hodgson.

However, the last walker, who had come all the way from Germany, did not finish until gone midnight. A total of 775 people finished the walk.

Former triathlete Paul Clements was the fourth person to finish. It was his first Itex Walk, but he said that it was something he had always wanted to do. ‘It has been great weather for it – not too hot, with a nice breeze,’ he said. ‘The support crew were fantastic along the way.’

The walkers also included Pc Bob Malet de Carteret who walked the route twice in memory of his former colleague, Pc Jayson Lee, who died suddenly earlier this year.
