HEROIC hotel staff saved a drowning holidaymaker with the kiss of life after they rescued him from the bottom of a swimming pool.
Head waiter Manuel De Nobrega and second chef Marian Birt pulled the unconscious David Cogger from the Highlands Hotel pool on Monday afternoon.
Mr De Nobrega, who completed a first aid course in December, gave the man artificial respiration to start him breathing again.
The 71-year-old tourist, who was released from hospital on Tuesday, is recovering well but does not remember anything from the dramatic rescue or how he got into trouble in the first place.
‘I want to thank them for saving my life,’ Mr Cogger said. ‘It was a shock to wake up in the hospital, but it was probably worse for my wife, Olive. ‘The first thing the doctor said to me was that I had had a lucky escape.’

I think it is wonderful that at last we can read some good news and just goes to show that the first aid courses taken by staff come into play more so when saving a life.

And where was the life guard ?
Or do the highlands hotel expect their catering staff to do this in their spare time .

Sean, you have missed the point I feel !
Local newspapers are all about reporting on life in the community, and this will include along with items of news, details of peoples achievements etc.
The story reported here is about somone who I know has worked for many years at Highlands Hotel, who has broadened his skills by obtaining a St John Ambulance first aid qualification, the skills thus leared being put into practice to save the life of a visitor, and this matter is thus worthy of being reported accordingly.

I am so glad that Manuel DID do the first aid course, as David Cogger is my Dad and thanks to him I still have a Dad around. Thanks to the staff at Highlands and the hospital for all your support.

Julie, is your dad any relation of Les Cogger.
Les Cogger wrote his name in wet cement on the Elizabeth Castle causeway back in the 1960s and it remained there for many years.
I always wondered where he came from.

Sorry, Judi, I called you Julie by mistake.
Apologies,

I’m very thankful too for Manuel’s training and quick thinking. I am Judi’s brother, and we are really glad to have our Dad home alive and well!
