UK Leaders gym course awaits Aland-bound youngster
Friday 26th June 2009, 2:59PM BST.
GYMNAST Matthew Hill (16) who is making his Island Games debut next week has won a place at one of this year’s UK Young Leaders Camps.
The De La Salle student will head to Rugby School, Warwickshire, where a course is being run by Gymnastics England, England Netball, the RFU and UK Athletics from 10-14 August.
Hill, who trains and coaches with the Jersey Gymnastics Club and assists with coaching at the Jersey Special Gymnastics Club, is one of just 50 selected for the camp from his sport.
To make it on to the course applicants were expected to demonstrate a commitment to volunteering within the sport and to developing their skills further, and must have achieved a level one coaching or judging qualification.
Hill currently coaches six hours a week and is also responsible for the design and maintenance of the JGC website.
The four day residential event for 16-19-year-olds will focus on the development of leadership skills through sport and, run by staff from the four sports, offers a range of workshops including coaching, officiating, media, sports psychology, leadership and management.
