Signs of wasteful times at the Airport, say WI

NEW signs on the west side of the Airport boundary have been described as ‘overkill with a capital O’ by the chairman of the Women’s Institute.

To show where people and vehicles should go, there are four signs in the space of about 100 metres, as well as bollards protecting the area the public should not enter.

The Women’s Institute has been conducting a campaign to highlight what they see as ridiculous signs erected around the Island. And the latest batch have certainly irked chairman Anne Pasturel.

‘Not for the first time there seems to be more money than sense. It looks ridiculous. I would have thought that after the last bollard fiasco at the Airport lessons would have been learned. This is overkill with a capital O,’ she said.

Jersey Airport paid the £2,900 bill for the cost of installing the bollards and arrow signs. Airport director Julian Green said that in July last year the Civil Aviation Authority visited Jersey Airport by invitation to conduct a routine audit of the aerodrome and its compliance with safety standards.

He said the audit findings contained a recommendation to restrict parking in Rue de L’Hermite that formed part of a safety clearance area in case of an aircraft accident.

Interestingly, back in 1974, an incomming plane skidded off the runway and ended up accross this very piece of road !

Also, in 1989, a 747 crashed on top of the town of Lockerbie – I wonder how many bollards have now been erected in that town ???

If you want to fly out of Jersey to the UK or use European airspace we have to follow CAA instuctions to the detail.

it looks to me as if the idea is really to narrow the road down so that anyone who parks there to watch the planes will cause an obstruction.

That way there will be no more parking in that lane to watch the planes. A shame. One of my favourite diversions, especially to watch the Electra go out in the evening with its smoky engines.

But of course I forgot. Who knows how many people must park there with evil intent. Like blocking the gate.

Why not just ban unnattended parking there?

Or will the next thing be inviting the CAA over to recommend that no pedestrians will be allowed there either.

Can’t really see the connection between this and using airspace though (3). Unless the CAA have said that they will deny use of the airspace if the gate is obstructed.

“Man who parked in front of gate brings European air traffic to standstill”. Now there’s something a real joker could do to cause havoc!

Is it really that dangerous to allow us to watch the planes? Why can’t we be allowed to decide for ourselves which minutely tiny risks we’re willing to accept?
