Swine flu update: Returning pupils to stay off school
Tuesday 30th June 2009, 2:59PM BST.
PUPILS returning to Jersey from parts of the UK affected by swine flu should stay off school for 48 hours, the Medical Officer of Health says.
Dr Rosemary Geller announced the change in policy yesterday after the UK’s Health Protection Agency extended the list of affected countries to cover the UK itself – especially London, Glasgow and the Midlands. Mexico, the USA and Australia are also on the list.
It is hoped that the new policy will help prevent a mass summer outbreak of swine flu, which earlier this week claimed its third fatality in the UK.
Dr Geller said: ‘Our key objective is to limit the spread of this new virus until we have a vaccine. Children tend to be more infectious than adults, so we feel this is a sensible precaution.’
Islanders who want more information on swine flu should phone the helpline on 445566 between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm from Monday to Friday.

I would have had more faith in Dr Rosemary Geller’s standard parrot fashion statements from the UK Health Protection agency, which she clearly represents, if it were not for the fact that the UK has disgracefully ended our reciprocal health agreement, following a dispute with Guernsey. Dawn Primarolo, the relevant UK Minister didn’t even grasp the fact that we are two entirely different self governing islands. She admitted to having never ever visited either. And yet a similar agreement remains with the Republic of Ireland, despite clear reports of a massive over contribution of millions of pounds in its reciprocal health agreement from the UK for several years. Dr Geller should revert to her mandarins in Colindale and express the depth of feeling of loyal crown subjects, whom have been so cheaply abandoned in a cynical political move from a bankrupt government.

I had a mexican meal the other night which contained pork at a restaurant near a school. Should I stay off work for 48 hours?

Mo, what makes you think I am being sarcastic! What good help! Just the usual load of nanny state drival and a drug which may or may not do any good, all for an illness which is no worse than the common cold and we will all catch in any case. Much better to have swine flu party and get it over and done with before the winter when it will be worse you can be sure.
