KIRSTEN McArthur and Rebecca Edwards stormed into the quarter-finals of the ladies’ singles competition yesterday.

McArthur, the sixth seed, dominated in her matches as she, having beaten Kreete Teder from Saaremaa 6-1, 6-2 then dismissed Aland’s Pia Mattson 6-1, 6-2 in the third round. She now takes on Menorca’s Gemma Triay Pons, the No 3, for a place in the semi final.

Edwards, the fifth seed, takes on Menorca’s Francisca Sintes, the No 4, in her quarter-final having beaten Carrol Reid from the Cayman Islands 6-1, 6-1 and Saaremaa’s Kristen Mets 7-5, 6-2.

Edwards said: ‘Everyone played really well yesterday and it’s a shame we couldn’t all go through but there are going to be some great matches today in the ladies’ events as all top eight seeds made it into the quarter-finals.’

Jersey’s Katie Gouyette beat Aland’s Pauline Nordlund 6-3, 6-7, 10-4 in the second round but lost to the No 1 seed from Gotland, the ‘Warrior Princess’ as she is more commonly known, Karolina Soor 6-0, 6-0 and Eva Moynihan was also beaten, losing to the Isle of Man’s Annetta Pakenham-Walsh 6-3, 6-1.

Moynihan and Gouyette had a bye in the first round of their ladies’ doubles and will face the Isle of Man’s Laura Gardner and Katie Tinkler in what is the quarter-finals.

James Connolly was knocked out of the men’s singles by Guernseyman Pat Ogier 6-3, 6-2 having earlier beaten the Isle of Man’s James Buxton, who retired in the second set.

James Faudemer was beaten in the second round by the seeded Peter Forsstrom 6-1, 6-4 as was team-mate Matt Harris who went out to Alec Arho Havren 6-0, 6-3.

Connolly and Faudemer pair up to take on Mica Koll and Eduardo Torres in the first round of the men’s doubles while the mixed pairs of Harris and Edwards as well as McArthur and Evans, should he declare himself fit enough to play, have a bye in the first round of their doubles competition.
