The Jersey football squad

Jersey’s footballers are through to the NatWest Island Games men’s final following a 2-0 win over Guernsey in Aland this evening.

Ross Crick set the Jersey on the road to victory, but the win looks to have come at a high price with goalkeeper Andrew Bird leaving the field five minutes from time with a suspected broken wrist. A second last-minute goal was scored by Mark Lucas

Jersey has had more success at the athletics track and swimming pool, adding four more gold medals to their Games tally this evening to bring the total to 20. This keeps them in third place overall, just one behind the Isle of Man and five ahead 0f old rivals Guernsey, who are in fourth.

Jersey athlete Sophie Twinam seared to a tremendous gold in the 400m hurdles final in Mariehiem. Twinam was the silver medallist two years ago in Rhodes. And Hazel Le Cornu added to the Island’s medal tally with a magnificent bronze.

Another star athlete Gemma Dawkins followed this up with gold in the 200m to add to her 400m victory, and Kathryn Rothwell took gold in the discus, having already won gold in the shot putt.

But the Island’s hopes of challenging for top overall looks to have been sunk in the pool with the Faroes swimmers again dominating the gold medal positions.

Jersey has enjoyed some success, however, with Katie Speller winning her third individual gold in the 100m IM.
