Jersey still in third

Jersey gained another gold medal in the NatWest Island Games this morning but the Island remains in third place overall.
Shooter Mary Norman claimed her second gold of the Games to bring the Island’s tally of golds to 16, keeping them in third place behind the Isle of Man, with 19, and the Faroe Islands, top with 24.
Gold medals seemed to be in short supply for Jersey in Aland yesterday. Despite some fantastic performances in the gymnastics and shooting, along with athletics and swimming, Jersey couldn’t match the medal mastery of Isle of Man and the Faroe Islands.
Yet Jersey did, for a fleeting moment top the table yesterday, after two golds from pistol shot Dave Ward (taking his career total to an age-matching 60!) and another from gymnast Matthew Maletroit edged them level with Faroes, with a better silver a haul. But it was short lived indeed as the north men and women surged back in the pool.
Yet again Jersey’s swimmers claimed another bundle of medals – seven in total, but crucially just one gold this time. Still, it was a treasured prize for the girls’ 4x50m freestyle relay team, who even then thought they might have to settle for silver until the Faroes were disqualified.
Gymnastics proved fruitful yesterday as 22-year-old Maletroit came away with a gold and three silvers and Matthew Hill a silver for his performance on the pommel.
Maletroit put in a solid performance to win overall silver in the FIG event, beating Commonwealth Games gymnast Alex Hedges to the gold medal on the parallel bars and finishing second on the rings and high bar too.
Jenna Murphy was the only medal winner at the athletics track last night as her PB equalling jump of 1.65m was good enough to secure a silver medal.
Jersey came close to the podium with Felicity Johnson Deeley and Tom Brown finishing fourth in their respective 5,000m races.
Ward, Jersey’s flag bearer and something of an Island Games icon now, was on target again as he produced two more golds for Jersey in the shooting, topping the leaderboard in both the 50m free pistol and the 25m centre fire events.
The ladies’ football team had a cracking 7-1 win over Saaremaa, with four goals from Jodie Botterill, which keeps their semi-final dreams alive. They just need a win today, over Aland, to ensure they reach the next stage. But that will not be easy.
Jersey’s golfers were pleased to put in a better performance on the course, with the men still in contention for a team gold, and the in-form Gavin O’Neill jointly leading the individual competition.
The ladies have conceded that a team medal may be out of the question, but still Olivia Jordan-Higgins continues to impress, and having finished up one over par she could well be in the running for a podium place.
The ladies’ volleyball squad really are having a tough time of it, as they lost another match, to Greenland, which puts them bottom of the group with one match to go. The men, however, scored a dream 3-1 victory over Gibraltar, which sends them into third place, and just a point behind Greenland.
Kim Ashton and Chris Cotillard were the top performers in the singles events of the badminton yesterday reaching the quarter-finals.
Cotillard eventually lost to the top seed Bror Madsen 21-7, 21-18 and Ashton went out to the second seed, Greenland’s Mille Schiott Kongstad, 21-17, 21-15.
Having won the silver medal in the archery recurve on Tuesday, Michael Coward was back in action yesterday but was knocked out in the quarter-final of the head-to-head recurve, losing 109-99 to the Faroe Islands’ Hans Petur Hojgaard 109-99 having earlier dismissed Guernseyman Daniel Power 102-83, and Ynys Mon’s Richard Salisbury 96-64.
Kirsten McArthur and Andrew Evans are Jersey’s last representatives in the tennis as they won their mixed doubles battle against the Rhodes pair 6-1, 6-1. Early yesterday McArthur was knocked out of the singles in the quarter-finals losing 6-4, 6-3 while team-mate Rebecca Edwards was beaten 6-1, 6-0.
Jersey’s return to Island Games judo suffered another disappointment yesterday as they were knocked out of the team event in the first round, losing 5-2 to Menorca and then suffering a repercharge knock out 4-2 to Saaremaa.
