States act to help debtors
Monday 6th July 2009, 3:00PM BST.
TENS of thousands of pounds are to be pumped into support services to help debt-ridden Islanders as part of the drive to kick-start the economy.
With levels of personal debt spiralling as a result of the economic downturn, Treasury Minister Philip Ozouf today announced two more recipients of cash from the fiscal stimulus package.
The Citizens’ Advice Bureau is to receive £65,000 from the £44 million set aside to help the Island through the credit crunch.
And £350,000 is to be spent on the refurbishment of St James’ Street refuge for the homeless to keep construction industry employees in work.
The announcement follows the news last week that stimulus money, which is being funded through States reserves, will be spent on providing more skills training for Islanders. A total of £2.5 million is being spent on providing extra places at Highlands.

Sums up COMs priorities
The building trade is more important to maintain than our Island’s heritage and tourist attractions as well as benefits for the local community to enjoy.
No thought for spending £350K on the homeless shelter(sorry how many people are homeless in Jersey?)and keeping builders in work. But we can’t help heritage and the people that may lose their jobs there?
But I forgot the Island seems to want to employ all builders to build on every possible part of this Island – what happens when there is no more land left to build we will have no Island and no heritage to preserve so maybe they are just thinking ahead….?
COM priorities just seem a little bit odd???

So will Jersey’s heritage still suffer. While the states pay for people’s wide screen TV’s and flash cars, they could never really afford. SNAFU!

WOW !!! tens of thousands of pounds to help with debt in Jersey, £65k to be given to C.A.B., sorry Phil you ought to be ashamed to put your name to such an abysmal amount, these are the ONLY people in Jersey trying to help !!!

I would have thought this to be a joke or typo if it had not been Jersey.
“Tens of thousands of pounds” so we will take it as read that iti is less than 100k and probably more like 30-40k or a little over 33 to 44 pence per person.
But wait, this money is not going to real people in need but to “support services”. No doubt to hire more people to explain why they do not qualify for the pitance that SS offer to cover people that find themselves out of work. This is happening when the States give contracts to builders that are free to bring in outside labour.
You could not write a better frace than this, what a truly perverse place.

Am I reading this right??? They have £44m set aside and they’re paying out the paltry sum of just over £400k??? They really are committed to helping Islanders out of debt arent they NOT. I’m glad I left there when I did.
