COMPETITION in the telecom sector is expected to increase with Airtel-Vodafone announcing plans to offer a landline service.

And in the battle for mobile business Sure has become the first to offer unlimited text messages and mobile downloads for a fixed monthly fee.

That offer also includes unlimited call minutes, but only to other Sure mobiles in Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man.

Airtel-Vodafone chief executive Iain Williams told the JEP that they will start offering fixed lines soon. ‘It is pretty imminent and we will launch within 30 days,’ he said.

Competition can only be a good thing but we are still some way off the deals available in the UK. For example the cheapest contract deal for the I Phone is £340, in the UK it’s free. Why don’t we get the same deals, my friend got a free laptop with his phone, you wouldn’t even get a free sd card over here.

Actually you can get an iPhone free with Jersey Telecom and Sure but it’s on the £40+ a month plan – similar to the UK actually.

Also – it isn’t a proper iPhone contract as Apple hasn’t officially made the iPhone available to any operator in the island yet.

At last, much needed competition on landline service.

I would be much happier if we could get some competition in the electricity market. People keep going on about telecoms but nothing about the way we are stuffed in this island by just about every other commodity.
