Abuse: States face civil action
Wednesday 8th July 2009, 3:00PM BST.
MEMBERS of the Jersey Care Leavers’ Association are planning to take civil action against the States of Jersey following the decision to drop 11 cases in the historical abuse inquiry.
The JCLA has accused Attorney General William Bailhache of ‘protecting’ abusers following his decision not to bring any action in relation to the cases.
Yesterday it was revealed that no charges would be brought against the 11 individuals, some who are understood to work or have worked for the Education and Social Services department.
Last night 15 alleged victims met to discuss the latest news. In a statement released to the JEP this morning the JCLA condemned the decision not to prosecute and claimed that some victims had not even been informed about the decision to drop more cases.
‘Some victims were not told. At the meeting some people texted and thought it was a hoax and that it was not true,’ said group spokesman Carrie Modral. ‘We want an investigation into how this was ever allowed to happen and to ensure that it never happens again. We have to get legal advice, but we want redress, an investigation and compensation. We are going to get advice about taking civil action against the States of Jersey.’
