Firefighters tackle the blaze

A HUGE furze fire ripped through the St Ouen countryside yesterday – for the second time in just four months.

About 40,000 sq metres of furze in the Les Landes area was destroyed as the blaze spread quickly across the ground while being fanned by strong winds.

In March a similar blaze destroyed about 30,000 sq metres of land just a short walk away at L’Etacq.

Firefighters were called to the scene at about 2.15 pm yesterday after receiving a number of calls from Islanders and tourists.

At the height of the blaze, 25 firefighters, including full and part-time officers, as well as three engines and a water carrier were at the scene. St Ouen honorary police also attended to help direct traffic.

Enough hyperbole, you cannot “Destroy” furze by fire, it is part of a natural cycle to remove detritus and renourish the plants, The gorse will grow back in a year or two.

    Blame it on El Nino

You can destroy property via furze though, which isn’t part of the “natural cycle” – enough litotes!
