Getting pushy – in a very nice way!
Monday 13th July 2009, 3:00PM BST.
VOLUNTEERS raised more than £900 for the Good Companions Club by shaking buckets during a wheelchair push last Friday.
Assistant manager Yvonne de Gruchy said that they had a great time mixing with people in St Helier.
‘It went very well,’ she said. ‘People were very generous and put their hands in their pockets and money in the buckets.’
The cash will go towards building a second centre for the club, which has become cramped after its Journeaux Street facility closed. The Good Companions provide care and activities for up to 30 elderly people a day but needs more space to cope with increasing numbers.
Fund-raising has only just started but Yvonne said that the push was a successful beginning. ‘There were people outside the pubs and we spoke to a few and they were all very generous,’ she said.
Seven volunteers were involved with the push, taking turns to sit in the wheelchair or use the three-wheel walking aid. Yvonne said that there would be other fund-raising events taking place but was not sure when they would repeat the wheelchair push. ‘We might do it again, but not just yet,’ she said.
‘We all thoroughly enjoyed it and want to say thank you to everyone who donated to us and took part.’
