ECONOMIC Development Minister Alan Maclean yesterday refused to be drawn on whether he believed the Waterfront development should go ahead as planned.

Senator Maclean was guest speaker at the Instititute of Directors lunch held at the Grand Hotel. He was sharing the IoD platform with Pat Power, director of Waterfront developers Harcourt, which is sponsoring the IoD Jersey branch lunches this year.

Mr Power was invited to speak for three minutes about Harcourt. He said the company had already built the Liberty Wharf site and new bus station, as well as the aparthotel over the bus station, ‘quietly and without fuss’.

Harcourt are refusing to put up the £95 million surety required by the States on the multi-million Waterfront plans, including 14 office blocks on Esplanade Square and an underpass, until they believe it is ‘appropriate’ to do so – that is when the final lease is in place.

    My Opinion

“Waterfront developers Harcourt, which is sponsoring the IoD Jersey branch lunches this year” What sort of message does this send out! Seems to me its a done deal behind the spin.

If our economic development minister is not sure what does this mean?
The front cover of New Scientist magazine last week was titled “it’s worse than we thought” this is talking about sea level rises, I wonder how many states members are aware sea levels are rising?
Conservative estimates are 80cm by 2100, with worst cases being quite a lot higher. I’d suggest that the states assembly walk around the harbour next time a high spring tide coincides with low air pressure armed with tape measures and discuss the future of the underpass, Normans, South Pier and the future world class finance center.
