THE Sportingbet Channel Islands men’s athletics team have made it through to the finals of the British Athletics League’s Golden Jubilee Cup after a convincing win in their regional semi-final in Kingston on Saturday.
The 10 in 100 competition, where 10 competitors from each club take part in 10 events in 100 minutes, featured eight clubs with the top team guaranteed a place in next month’s finals.
Also competing in their semi-final, the women’s team failed to qualify but put in an impressive performance despite being without some key athletes.
One of those missing was 16-year-old Kathryn Rothwell, a double Island Games gold medallist, who was busy throwing a personal best of over 40m to win the discus at this weekend’s Home Nations Schools International.
In Kingston on Saturday, the CI men topped the score board convincingly, according to coach Andrew Winnie, despite being without Tom Druce, Glen Etherington and Lee Merrien.
There were impressive performances from Jason Fox, who won the high jump, David Martin, who won the long jump, and Zane Duquemin – competing in his first cup event – who won the discus and came second in the shot putt with a personal best throw.
In the six track events, Guernsey’s Dale Garland won the 400m and came second in the 100m, while Hywel Robinson came fourth in the 200m, Peter Irving came second in the 400m hurdles, and Lee Garland came second in the 1,500m. The team also finished third in the medley relay event.
