JERSEY’S hopes of cutting a dash in the prestigious World Champion of Champions bowls event in Ayr were looking good last night.

Allan Quémard had won both his matches, and Lindsey Greechan had posted a landslide 18-1, 17-3 card.

Greechan slipped up in her second game against Irish star Bernie O’Neill, but play is on a group basis for the first five days, and the cut-and-thrust of the knockout stage does not start until next Monday.

Quémard scraped through his opening match with Steve McIntyre, from the Isle of Man, winning by the narrowest of margins, 7-7, 9-8, but hit form to beat Guernsey’s Matt Le Ber, 4-10, 9-7, 5-1, in the afternoon.

From standing 4-4 in the first set, Le Ber took charge and powered home, 10-4, but Quémard gave the Guernsey man a taste of his own medicine in the second, ditching the jack and turning the set his way with a brilliantly taken treble on the fifth end.

Greechan found her rhythm from the start against Norfolk Islander Christine Hore, who was never at the races. Scoring at will, the Jersey star opened her account with a full house, and scored three fours and four trebles on her way to an accumulative 35-4 scoreline.
