Special swine flu clinics to be set up

SWINE flu clinics are to be set up to help doctors cope as the virus continues to spread across the Island.

GPs are being asked to rearrange their surgeries to create dedicated swine flu treatment areas or nominate a time of day to examine only Islanders with flu symptoms. Each surgery will decide whether to introduce the new measures, or continue to treat patients via a home visit.

The changes were announced as the number of cases of H1N1 in Jersey reached 56.

Dr Rosemary Geller, Medical Officer of Health, said: ‘As the number of swine flu cases increases, we are conscious of the increasing demands that home visits will place on GPs. In order to help them manage their workload, GPs can now set up flu clinics.

‘The clinics will be specifically for flu patients. GPs have been given stringent infection control guidelines and anyone attending the clinic should not come into contact with non-flu patients in waiting rooms to avoid spreading the virus.’

• A flu helpline is available on 445566 between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm from Monday to Friday.

What! Did I read that right? Designated swine-flu areas! Obviously, family doctors can’t be expected to run round and examine all the “self-quarantined” sick during the imminent swine-flu epedemic, but won’t designated swine-flu treatment areas help spread infection?
If Islanders with ordinary flu walk into a “swine-flu zone”, then they risk walking out with the real thing and taking it home, to work and around town. Wouldn’t an efficient “Treatment line”, where informed doctors listen, advise and prescribe medication, be of more use? And wouldn’t a doorstep-medicine delivery service(…and I mean doorstep with no contact!)slow the epedemic down and allow doctors and the hospital to work at a more acceptable pace?

A massive 56 cases out of approx. 100,000 inhabitants and we need designated doctors time. How about all the people taking up doctors time with a sniffle or to get 2 weeks off work being given a bill for wasting resources and being refused a sick note. I imagine that would lighten the work load.

Just an idea but why dont they make this years Jersey Live into a “swine flu party” so all the kids ( as in the Uk the kids appear to be the most susceptible) can get infected and get it all over with before they go back to school?!
