Surfers save four in ‘heroic’ rescue
Monday 27th July 2009, 2:59PM BST.
SURFERS rescued four swimmers, including two children, from a powerful rip tide at St Ouen’s Bay yesterday evening.
But some of the rescuers also found themselves in trouble and seven people were eventually taken to the Hospital for check-ups.
The sea was packed with surfers, body boarders and swimmers as Islanders made the most of the large waves but it proved too much for four people, who found themselves being swept along in a rip current through breaking surf.
They got into trouble in an area between the Watersplash and El Tico at about 8.40 pm.
The Fire and Rescue Service launched their rescue boat from Le Braye but before they could get there, the swimmers were saved from the rough sea by surfers and people on the shore.

For as long as I can remember surfers have been saving lives, risking their own, bravely ,many times anonymously these guys have given selflessly and with a social conscience and respect for life..I hope their values are remembered when some coast wrecking developers want to trash and Benidormize the bay that these wave riders love so well….just as it is.
surf’s up !
