There’s still time to object to this ‘Dubai development’
Wednesday 29th July 2009, 3:00PM BST.
From Dr Miriam Noel.
I AM extremely concerned about the proposed developments on the Wolf’s Caves site, which is in the green zone, adjoins a zone of outstanding character and National Trust land, and is also very close to the coastal path.
The existing one-storey building does need replacing, but surely by a development of the same footprint area and height, and consisting of one property only.
The on-site notice at the left hand side of the entrance to the car park would only be seen by walkers and tourists who use the car park to access the coastal path.
I have inspected the plans at the Planning Department at South Hill and notice the futuristic science fiction-type design of the two very large buildings.
The plans for both are almost identical except for their orientation and consists of five (not four) bedrooms, eight other rooms, two stores, a workshop, gym, three under cover parking spaces and a swimming pool.
This style, in my opinion, would be more suited to a development in Dubai rather than a coastal position on the small, beautiful, traditionally orientated Island of Jersey.
The gift of part of the headland to the National Trust, the moving of the coastal path nearer to the coast and the provision of a small car park elsewhere seems, in my opinion, like bribery.
The maintenance of the headland would have to be taken over by the National Trust for Jersey, which I assume would be at their own expense.
The prices of these properties have as yet not been discussed. Comparing these with other developments in Jersey ,I would estimate that they would be in the region of £10 million each; this in order to maximise profits.
The developers, in their information pack, said that the development of this type of residence has been supported by the States in order to attract very wealthy immigrants.
In view of the number of objections raised about the development at La Coupe after the building was well advanced, I suggest individuals interested view the plans at South Hill and submit their views either supporting or opposing the plans before Planning make any decision.
These views must be submitted to Planning before 4 August 2009, being 21 days after the site notice and application in the Jersey Evening Post. In the event of buildings in this type of location being constantly replaced by over development, I fear that in the future the coastal and rural nature of Jersey will disappear forever.

KIT 4 CLUBS
Win a share of £10,000
2012 is the year of the London Olympics and to celebrate this great event the Jersey Evening Post, in association with sponsors Ogier is giving all sporting clubs a chance to win a share of £10,000.
I read with amusement Dr Noel’s letter to the JEP dated 29 July. A couple of points jumped out at me. Dr Noel is obviously residing in a wonderful part of the Island judging from her postal address – she is hardly underprivileged – why does she feel other people are not entitled to enjoy the same if they can afford it? Where on earth does she get her overinflated prices from – £10m – I doubt it somehow and finally I don’t think it is very objective to comment on the value of the homes the developers are creating. Why shouldn’t they “maximise profits” anyway? Maybe she should emigrate to a communist country, sounds like a similar mindset. What is it to her what they earn from the development, they are after all the ones taking the risks – sour grapes I would say. Ironic really when you think what GP’s charge!

I’m sorry Hermione but Dr Noel doesn’t have to go far for her price comparison, only as far as the former Bistro Frere site at Rozel to be precise!
And again I will point out that the good doctor’s fears about public access to coastline are also supported by the Frere site, where, as a restaurant, access to the gardens and the coastline and small beach below was at least possible for members of the public who were patrons of that establishment.
Not so now or in the future. How long before the landscaping and the security fences?
I suspect you have some sort of vested interest which you haven’t disclosed for making your comment about the doctor’s perfectly reasonable concerns.
Funny how those who have no valid point to make always resort to personal comment and attack?
