THIEVES targeted one of Jersey’s oldest stores and stole cash from the till when the owners’ backs were turned.

Around £300 was taken from the cash till at the Red Triangle Stores in the Central Market at around 4 pm on Monday.

Proprietor John Farley has reported the theft to the police, but wants other shopkeepers to be wary.

He says that he spotted a man acting suspiciously in the store, which sells toys and hardware, before the theft and even saw him in front of the cash till, but the till was emptied while no one was around.

Mr Farley said: ‘In this day and age you have got to be more security-conscious. I do not expect the police to catch him and I don’t expect the money back – I have just written that off.’

The thief must have been very clever to get into that till. I remember it as ancient old and a bit like Arkwrights in ‘Open all Hours’ You go near it it bites your hand off!!

    Nasty little thieving scrotes.
Red Triangle is one of the nicest shops in Jersey. They always help you, are always pleasant and always have the oddest things that you need.

I am sorry to hear of the theft of £300 from the Red Triangle, yet John Farley is right when he mentioned that you more security conscious.

Was there any CCTV in the shop or alarm on the till? Probably not…..Mr. Farley is a gentleman who is from an era when people were too trusting.

Let’s hope if the police do catch the offender, that he or she gets their just deserts and that the courts don’t just give him or her, a slap on the wrist.

In response to David (1) It’s a good job Mr Farleys till was not like Arkwrights.
However, the plus side of this would have been that the thief would have been caught with his hands firmly jammed in the coffers, but it would probably have meant Mr Farley would have been the one up in court and charged for causing injury to the thief, with the thief getting a slap on the wrist.

The unfortunate way of the world today.

Red Triangle stores are one of the last REAL shops and has a place in the affections of many a local who needed the odd stuff, where else can you get mothballs and Fly papers or a wooden mousetrap and a model plane or more exciting a packet of caps….Stealing from such a place,is the pits…….and shows how the conscience of some has become deadened. and whilst I hold the perp.responsible…..is it not really the responsibility of us all to make our society a more human caring place…and stop all this corporate profit at any cost fawning which ultimetely hardens the heart and isolates. This is where we need leaders to emerge, not these political mandarins we have now .

Why not drop by and give him five quid, Red Triangle is a one of a kind shop and Jersey needs it.

It should have a Heritage listing, it was/is a scary/amazing place for most kids to go.

I must have brought hundreds of Airfix kits and soldiers there as well as DIY stuff.

scumbags….I too loved getting my airfix models and soldiers as a kid. Even popped in not long ago for nostalgic reasons.

    Great shop.

Maybe the market/states can employ some store detective/mall cop type person to help deter this sort of problem in the market or even town in general.

There are plenty of unemployed out there….or even those receiving states handouts without contributing to anything….make them useful!

As someone who was a regular customer at Red Triangle stores as a kid, I am very sorry to hear of Mr Farley’s loss.

However, having worked in retail back in the 1980′s nothing suprises me, and I don’t trust anyone. We caught many shop lifters, but it was virtually impossible to secure a conviction. One case involving a well spoken graduate went to court, and I and a member of my staff turned up to give evidence. It’s just a shame the defendant did not bother attending court. (I never heard anything more on that one) On another occasion, I spent an hour during the busy pre-christmas rush at Police Headqaurters giving a statement about an ‘incident’ that occured the previous day. Returning to the shop, I saw someone ‘bagging’ a Radio Times. I am afraid I just looked the other way.

We also had a beach shop at St Brelades, and someone reached behind the ice cream counter and nicked the staff’s electric kettle, cable and all !!

At the end of the day, it is the honest shopper who pays, and believe me, the losses in retail through theft are enormous.

That shop has saved me on a number of occasions. Whilst I wouldn’t like to do a stocktake there, Mr F knows where everything is and will always give advice in a freindly way. I hope the vermin who did this are apprehended.

It’s just a shame we cannot “clamp” these thieves!

Again…..it’s becoming a cliche now……but there is “no deterrent” !

Where are all the store detectives or bobbies on the beat like the “good old days”.

As a kid we never contmeplated shoplifting because of the aforementioned deterrents and potential embarassment of getting caught!

#13 B.S.Deluxe – I worked for 16 months in the Sultante of Muscat and Oman. There thieves had their right hand cut off…….I recall a cartoon of a police officer going to a file in the Oman Criminal Record Office and finding a hand in the file. The officer was saying, “Yes this man has one previous conviction.” Yes it is a bit extreme and of course I wouldn’t want that to occur in Jersey, but more needs to be done to deter criminal behaviour.

I agree ZBD and I undersand the SoJ are busy with other crimes (not to mention laying armed sieges to dangerous egg throwing disturbances):-)

Maybe the States can “employ” people to work undercover to help catch or prevent shoplifting…..these jobs could be created using the “recession package” funds and maybe the shops could contribute…..even better still, those on States handouts could “earn” them instead of having them gifted.

B.S.Deluxe # 16 Touché my friend. The incident in Seale Street was eggstordianry, but you can’t tar all cops with the same brush. There are those who want to do a good job and who’d love to catch those who stole the cash from John Farley…I know I would.

Yet another example of how desperate people are becoming in the current economic climate? or is this just another example of the lack of moral values in people today? I suspect it could be either but it is upsetting that this great shop which John Farley has run with huge efficiency and hard work since I was a boy (rather more years than I care to remember)is the target in this instance of such a callous act! The Red Triangle should surely be preserved as monument to free enterprise and as an example of how a small business should be run. It is, and always has been, an Alladin’s Cave of sundry goods and boy’s (And girls) of all ages, toys! and if it wasn’t available anywhere else on Island then it or something like it would always be found or obtained by Mr Farley at a reasonable price!
More power to you elbow John, I hope they catch the person responsible.

Oh yes one further comment, there is a security camera in the Red Triangle (5.ZBD) but in truly magnificent John Farley style, it’s in a box in the window with a price tag on it!Go it John don’t let them change or grind you down!
