8-megabit broadband net gains
Saturday 1st August 2009, 3:00PM BST.
JERSEY will get 8-megabit broadband in around eight weeks, Jersey Telecom has announced.
It was originally intended that the new faster connections would be available at the end of August, but the launch date has now been put back.
Jersey Telecom has also assured customers that they get the connection speed they pay for when new faster services are launched in eight weeks.
The announcement follows a damning report on connection speeds in the UK which was published earlier this week by the telecom industry watchdog, Ofcom.
It showed many would be lucky if they could connect to the internet at half the speed they were paying for. For example, those paying for eight megabits, were actually getting just four. But Yannick Filleul, of Jersey Telecom, said that Islanders will have no such problems.

Based upon JT’s previous performance record, i can’t help being sceptical about their ability to supply when we currently get told there is nothing they can do about sorting out the current system apart from telling us to go elsewhere, now that’s what i call customer relations!!!

What a surprise! A delay of a month, we are lagging behind the world. In my Student house at university we had a 24Mbps line with a top download speed of about 18Mbps, it was brilliant. Over here we are still stuck on ridiculously slow speeds.

Under this new and amazing scheme will all clients connecting at 2048Mbits/s be getting something close to 2048Mbit/s?
Or will the situation continue as it is now with some paying for ‘up to 2048Mbits/s’ but actually receiving ca 512Mbits/s or is a few sad cases struggling to get 256Mbits/s?
Really they should be paying £5 per month for the service they receive!

Newtel are no better, complained for months, enginierbeen out 5 times, download speed sill rubbish

Bottom line, I’m still on 1mb here. So congrats to people who get upgraded, but that day seems a long way off for the “rural” community (yes, they actually used that excuse on the phone when describing an island 9 miles x 5 miles).
It does not depend on being rural or town at all. I know of people in St Helier and St Ouen that can get 220Kb/sec download speeds.
There are a few bad lines everywhere but at the same time there are notorious blackspots.
Buy or rent a house close to the exchange and you should be all right my boy

Lets hope JT can deliver on their promise, 8 meg would be great but it’s a rare day when I get the 2 meg I am currently paying for.
At present I pay the same for 2 meg as the UK pays for 8 meg so I dread to think what the 8 meg service will cost.
Why don’t JT reduce the contention ratio from 50/1 to improve download speeds during busy periods, there have been times when I have re connected my dial up as the download speed was better than broadband.
Good effort JT but you must make it work, we already pay much more than the UK for a reduced service, start delivering on your tagline – World smart – home grown.

Loads problems last week. Pc shutting down with loss to internet connection ,slow internet when it returned. Phoned Newtel they blame JT all the time for repairs. Poor service here i doubt the new faster connection. I pay newtel monthly fee for dial up speed!
Clearly there is much dissatisfaction here, will JT please respond to allay fears. Most people appear not to be getting the service or speed they are paying for, whilst this is also a concern in the UK we are paying more and getting less.
Come on JT, respond to your critics.

Anyone would think the JEP’s positive reporting of Jersey Telecom correlates to the amount of advertising it places with the paper.

Megabit or Megabyte? I suspect it is the latter, and it’s quite an important difference.
8 Megabit = 1 Megabyte, so let’s get the units right!
The simple fact of the matter is if people are stupid enough to sign up for the new 8 meg service when JT still can’t tell us what the prices are going to be then more fool them. Like a lot of the other comments unless you go to JT direct the companies will blame JT for the problems and vice versa……..
Boils down to one thing they are getting their money they have no worries, customer loses out as per usual. that same familier feeling i’m allright jack sod u.

Currently on a good day you can get about the following out of a good JT / Newtel business line;
Download Speed: 1755 kbps (219.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 421 kbps (52.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Domestic lines may not be so good due to higher contention etc and your milage will vary depending on your distance from the exchange and who else is sharing the DSLAM with you.
I have seen domestic lines go as low as 25KB/sec.
The new 8 Meg service should give you around 850 -900 KB/sec if you are a member of the lucky address club.
