TWO Islanders were in a critical condition in a French hospital today after six Jersey residents were mowed down by a suspected drunk driver.

The group, who are members of staff at the trust company Dominion, were walking through Rennes city centre in the early hours of Saturday when they were struck by the out-of-control vehicle.

Two members of the group – a 31-year-old woman and a 60-year-old man – suffered multiple serious injuries and were today in a critical but stable condition in Rennes General Hospital.

The 35-year-old French driver was taken to hospital with a number of minor injuries. He was later arrested on suspicion of drink driving.
