Charity Cup: It’s a spot-kick exit for Tower
Tuesday 4th August 2009, 3:00PM BST.
THE football season went off with a bang last night as Sporting Academics beat First Tower on penalties in the preliminary round of the Charity Cup.
With both sides preparing for a new league this season, Accies down to the Championship and Tower up to the Premiership, this was always billed to be a close match.
So with the score 2-2 after extra time only penalties could separate the sides with Accies sealing the win 4-3 in the shoot out.
Accies’ manager Tommy Kyle said his team ‘were still in the changing room’ when Stuart Daines’ shot put Tower ahead after the first minute but they got one back when a cross by Phil Helleur was met by Jamie Roberts who put it into the net.
