Beeches crowned again – without a ball bowled
Wednesday 5th August 2009, 3:00PM BST.
BEECHES didn’t even need to lift a bat last night to claim the NatWest Evening League Division I title.
With St Helier RFC scratching their match and Ashburton defeating second-placed Walkovers’ the points landed in Beeches’ favour and they now go into the final league match of the season tonight as champions.
Hearing the news this morning, Beeches captain Alex Morgan said: ‘It’s fantastic that we’ve won for the second year in a row and it’s gone down to the wire again with Walkovers beating us last week to keep things close.
‘Obviously it’s a shame to win it in this fashion but unfortunately St Helier couldn’t put a side together and the game was called off. We’ll be a lot more relaxed for tonight’s match against St Ouen now although we’ll still go out there to win.’
