Old guard is resisting the new tools of government

From Gino Risoli.
THE most important development this century, that has and will continue to change the world utterly and completely, is information technology: the ability to move information to the other side of the world or simply down the road in seconds.
Why is this so important? Information is that which changes our minds. It is how the human body creates new experiences. It is the essence of experience.
New information alters the chemical structure in our brain so as to create new experiences. Without new information we get bored or, worse still, we die. Which brings me back to my favourite subject – politics.
We have great technology, yet our politics is so boring. We have new tools at our fingertips, but the old guard are too frightened to allow us this new information.
They cite things like commercial confidentiality to keep us ignorant of the facts, or national interest or data protection or national security. All this information belongs to us.
The fact that they are keeping information from us must be seen as a crime against Jersey people.
They squander our money with impunity and they will shortly be asking for more and more taxes to keep up with their insatiable appetite for our money. Am I the only one here that is growing impatient with this status quo?
How much longer should we experience a minority controlling our destinies? We are at the crossroads of a very different world and the people who are presently at the helm have not done their job.
The world today is changing too fast for the status quo to continue. We need better representation. We need a more interactive government.
Transparency in government will secure both. Transparency must not be used retrospectively. Transparency is necessary for our society to move forward on a more efficient and creative path.
I would like to see legislation, as soon as possible, to enable information technology in all government departments better to deliver unprecedented access to information.
It is time to take over the reins of our lives so that we can create and experience an even better world.

I agree 100%, it’s time for a change in the way government decisions are arrived at. We have been promised, years ago, that there would be ‘open government’, but they haven’t decided when.
Good interesting article.

There’s not much chance of “ordinary” citizens gaining access to infomation if States Members outside the CoM are excluded even when they form part of Scrutiny and are supposed to have the right to all the relevant information in order to investigate all ministerial decisions.
