On yer bikes?

From Julia Jones.
WE have just returned from an amazing two-week holiday in Jersey and I am compelled to write about what an incredible place it is to cycle.

I have been coming to Jersey all my life (my mother grew up in the Island), but this year we saw a whole different side to the Island thanks to our decision to hire bikes and a bike trailer.

We have a three-year-old and a nine-month-old and it made a wonderful change not to use a car. We were able to go from Grouville to the Zoo (twice), the Jersey War Tunnels, the fish vans on the edge of town, Rozel Bay, etc, etc, almost exclusively on cycle routes or green lanes.

We found that what little traffic there was on the lanes was almost without exception extremely helpful, slowing right down or stopping for us to pass. It was so much nicer arriving in places like Rozel without a car and feeling we weren’t adding to the terrible congestion in what is otherwise such a lovely place.

Thanks to all the drivers who helped us to have such a brilliant holiday. We are telling everyone we know what a perfect place Jersey is for a family cycling holiday.

But also, I urge residents to think about cycling more – the map of the cycle routes is just £1 from the Tourism office and I can’t think of a better way to enjoy the Island.

I for one would like to thank you for those comments. I wait now to hear from the impatient drivers to start rattling off their usual rubbish about cyclists.
