THE Sportingbet Channel Islands men’s athletics team face a tough test this weekend when they take on higher league clubs at the televised British Athletics League 10 in 100 Cup Final.

Contested at Copthall tomorrow, the final will feature seven other tough teams, including Cardiff who currently compete two leagues above the CIAC in Division II, in a hectic competition where 10 athletes compete in 10 events in 100 minutes.

And they may also get a taste of the limelight with the competition scheduled to be televised on Channel Four’s weekly athletics programme, the McCain Track and Field Show, which goes out on Sunday mornings at 8.25 am.

Guernsey’s Tom Druce (800m) makes a welcome return to the team following injury and will compete alongside Jersey’s Zane Duquemin (shot and discus), Peter Irving (400m hurdles), Stephen Prosser (100m) and Jason Fox (high jump) as well as Guernsey’s Dale Garland (400m), Nathan Stevens (200m), Lee Merrien (1,500m), David Martin (long jump) and Hywel Robinson (relay).

The other teams competing are; Cardiff, Bolton, Rugby, Blackheath and Bromley, Stevenage, Crawley and Kingston and Poly, but despite the tough opposition, Sportingbet CIAC coach, Andrew Winnie, said his team would still be in with a chance.
