OPTIMUS were crowned the inaugural NatWest Channel Islands League champions in the most dramatic of fashions on Saturday afternoon.

Requiring 12 points to take the title from Guernsey’s Total Cobo, they achieved the feat despite losing by one run against Guernsey’s PWC Academy as Cobo themselves were also defeated by three runs by Aztec Springfield at Grainville.

Optimus captain James Caunt said: ‘It was a strange day; Cobo’s game was well ahead of ours and we knew they had failed to get the eight runs they required to get off the final over to beat Springfield.

‘At the time I was just going out to join Ryan Driver at the wicket and we were around 100 runs short of victory.

‘Once we got the thumbs up that we were champions obviously we wanted to win too. It was a fantastic game in the end but unfortunately we were beaten by just one run.

Hmm…that is not Jamie Brewster bowling, he bowled from the golf course end and I was the umpire….I also gave him out LBW when Optimus attempted to chase down the runs, rubbish shot I might also add! :-P
