RESULTS day can be a depressing event for those who don’t make the A-level or GCSE grade. But is it the end of the world?

You do not have to look far for those who by-passed higher education and espouse the merits of the university of life.

We asked prominent Islanders how they fared all those years ago.

Dr Susan Turnbull
Deputy Medical Officer of Health
Chemistry A, biology A, physics B. Went on to study medicine at Newcastle University.

Emma Martins
Data protection commissioner
B and two Ds in sociology, art and general studies. Started in finance industry and has just completed an Open University degree social science with politics and was awarded a 2:1.

Deputy Ian Gorst
Social Security Minister
History E and business studies E. Went to work for an insurance company and did some youth work
in inner-city London before going into banking and accountancy.
