BUSINESSES are being advised to review their policies in the light of the new Supply of Goods and Services Law, which comes into effect next Tuesday.

This will be the first time that Jersey consumers have had a modern statute to refer to in cases where they believe they have been treated dishonestly.

The new legislation, which is based on the UK law, means that after 1 September businesses will have to make sure that any goods they sell must be ‘of satisfactory quality’ and services carried out ‘with reasonable care and skill’.

Unlike the UK, this requirement for goods also applies to private sales between individuals. For instance someone selling their car must make the buyer aware of any defects.

Advocate Timothy Hanson has organised a seminar tomorrow to advise businesses of their responsibilities under the new law and any pitfalls that they could face.
