Move for more time on police cell inspections

A DEBATE on whether to have spot checks and random inspections of police custody cells may be put off for three months.
Home Affairs Minister Ian Le Marquand is asking the States to delay debating a proposition calling for a new inspection régime because his department is under considerable pressure with other work.
Earlier this month former policeman Deputy Bob Hill lodged the proposition for a UK-style custody visitor scheme which would allow ordinary members of the public to make unannounced visits to the police station to inspect custody cells, as well as to interview detainees.
At present it is the Jurats, who decide on guilt and sentence in the Royal Court, who carry out the inspections.
