FOR the first time in over a decade Jersey will have two surfers competing for Great Britain at next year’s World Surfing Junior Games in New Zealand.

Both Matt Chapman, who turns 16 this year, and Nathan Elms (16) have been named as under-18s in the team that will fly the British flag at the event in January.

The announcement follows their performance in the British Junior National Championships at Fistral Beach, Newquay, at the weekend when Elms finished third at U16 and U18 level and Chapman fifth in the U16 event.

Although the format of the competition has changed in the last five years Jersey has not had a representative at junior level for many years so to now have two has delighted the Jersey Surfboard Club.

JSC president Dave Ferguson said: ‘The whole club is just really pleased for them because they’ve put in so much hard work and effort in. I think the Jersey surfers will do the best out of the whole team – they’ve both been training all summer and they’re ready for this.’
