UFO startles elderly Gorey residents

Watchers of the skies: Sisters Gladys and Christine Manning, who say that they saw a UFO in their back garden. Picture by Richard Wainwright (00784296)
IT was red, it hovered in the sky, it looked something like a dolls’ house and travelled at great speed.
The UFO was watched intently by two elderly sisters who live at Gorey and who now want to find out if anyone else saw what made their jaws drop late last Friday night.
Gladys Manning (92) was opening the side curtain in her lounge in Place Le Couteur when she saw the red object in a gap between trees behind her garden at about 11.30 pm.
‘I was so shocked that I called out to Christine and forgot she was deaf. In a second it flashed off across the sky towards Gorey Pier,’ said Gladys. However, when Gladys went to open the other curtain the object came back to hover in the same place, and this time it was seen by Christine.
Again the object, which the women said appeared to them to be about the size of a television screen, was there for a few seconds before it zipped off at speed in the same direction as before.

What’s the betting it was another of those Chinese lanterns, they look somewhat “dolls house” shaped.
Hope the elderley ladies weren’t too frightened.

hmm…two 90yr olds see lights in the sky the night before the International Air Display. Its hardly a mystery!

You have to love a story like this one. The full article says that one of the fine old ladies called out to her sister but then remembered that she was deaf!
Somehow cant imagine ET travelling for years at the speed of light to reach our primitive planet simply to play hide and seek in Gorey.

Obviously it was the Jersey Live team just checking out their equipment – nothing to worry about!!

when l was seventeen years old l saw a cluster of UFO’s late one evening. many reported seeing the saucer like objects which made the news in the local press. it is something that one can only experience but for others difficult to believe.

Well, I’m not 90, (I’m a sprightly 51!)but last Monday evening 07/09 at about 9:30 my neighbour, Denise, who is younger then I am, knocked on my door and asked me to confirm that she really was seeing what she thought she was seeing. I stepped out on to the patio and along with her two teenage sons we watched spellbound as two orange, spherical objects “danced” around each other over the south east of the Island. Now, we are all very sensible, sober people, but we watched these “UFO’s” for a full two minutes before they simply disappeared. It was a clear night and none of us were in any doubt that we had witnessed something quite extraordinary. We live in St Peter and are wondering if anyone else saw these objects. I have to admit that I am very cynical when it comes to things like this, but I can’t deny what we saw and it truly was bizarre! I would be grateful for any feedback and having told Denise that I was e-mailing you I know she would be very interested as well.

Hi Steve…I saw them at 9:34 on the 7th off the west coast.

These were Chinese lanterns. My family set them off as part of a birthday party celebration. Sorry to disappoint you all !

Actually, it was last Friday night (4th) they saw these ‘UFOs’ so there!!

Just because you don’t know what something was does not mean that it is an alien, simply that you don’t know what it was.
The likelihood is that it is something quite banal.

How lovely to get to that age and be excited by… anything…. really…and you know what ..who are we to say they didn’t….

My guess is it actually was a television screen, reflected in the window. When you turn your head, the reflection can appear to shoot off. That the object appeared in the same place twice, then flew away in exactly the same manner, is a pretty good indication that what they saw was a reflection in the glass.

I can confirm the reference to item 9, the lights being chinese lanterns. My colleague and I (duty Centenier) were on duty in the Parish Police car, parked in the layby opposite union road, keeping a watch on the traffic and we observed the lanterns being launched from the vicinity of the village. They actaully looked very nice and drifted harmlessly out across the harbour, following the prevailing offshore westerly wind.

Yes,I too saw just one red light which was travelling fairly slowly towards Gorey castle. I live on the hill and went out onto my terrace to try and look at it through binoculars but being nighttime it was difficult. It almost certainly was not a plane because of the redness of the light and you could not see the shape of the fusilage. No way were the elderly ladies “seeing things

No. 6 the two orange oval shapes you saw were simply lazers reflecting from a ground source – nothing phenomenal.

Did anyone read the article? I’ve never heard of or seen a Chinese lantern that “flashed off across the sky”, returned to the same spot and then “zipped” off again with the witnesses describing as “great speed”. Quite unusual behavior for something like a Chinese lantern, don’t you think?
Nothing like the comment regarding “drifting harmlessly … following the prevailing wind.

I have seen the red ones in New York with another person in 1972 and they’re for real not swamp gas, airplanes, weather balloons or lighthouses. Think what you want but the truth is out there.

What always suprises me is that people think that an advanced civilisation capable of building spacecraft that could visit Earth (and Jersey at that!) would have their spacecraft LIGHTS on!
What would be the point of even having lights let alone switching them on?

Interesting!

You lot make me laugh so much. This site is better than any comedy show. Come on, who’s next with a claim to have seen an alien in a donald duck costume zooming across St Ouens in the middle of the afternoon eating a hungry man special. I’ll then wait for someone to say it was actually a kite being blown from Big Verns balcony. Can an alien get a J Cay? Can’t believe no one has opened up that tedious debate yet…

Arthur Haynes – ha ha loved it! It’s because they’re so advanced they still need lights to see in the dark.
Seriously though – if I was an alien on a mission to scout the universe to find the supreme whiners, conspiracy theorists, most ungrateful and ignorant to the grass is greener concept, Jersey would be the first, and last, place I’d visit!

Funny enough two of us reported a very similar sighting back in June, Orangy red ball hovering over Archirondel way then shot straight upwardly into the sky then disappeared amongst some cloud! Thankfully others are starting to witness this.

I saw a light of some sort too, approx 11.10 walking back from Pembroke, I only had 3 pint’s too, quiet evening!
I noticed a yellow, orange light in sky moving slowly, stopped to see if it was moving, just though weird how slow it was and lights were not flashing. thought nothing more and carried on home, only thought of it again after the story broke and it was mentioned that it happened on the Friday night in question.

Arthur #19, people’s ‘knowledge’ of alien life is limited to what they see on TV, much of which goes totally against the basic laws of physics!
I see something that I can’t identify in the sky I just think ‘I wonder what that was’… I can’t say I think it newsworthy
