£85,000 is paid in rent to Harbours
Monday 14th September 2009, 3:00PM BST.
From the workers of the St Helier panel of the Jersey Occupation Tapestry: Philippa Romeril, Norma Collas, June Le Rossignol, Doreen Perchard, Margaret de Burgos, Sheila Campbell, Beryl Cadiou, Pam Marett, Julie Sims, Doreen Jennings.
THE Jersey Occupation Tapestry was stitched by 228 dedicated embroiderers taking 30,000 hours, with 7.5 million stitches, not including the ones put in by members of the public so that they could be part of this living heritage.
It records the five years of Occupation in the Island, for adults, visitors, children and future generations to admire and, most importantly, learn about this significant time in the history of the Island. It is probably the largest community project ever undertaken in Jersey.
The gallery was designed to house the tapestry, and the way it is displayed is very important. No other venue would do it justice.
As one of the main expenses of running the Tapestry Gallery is the £85,000 rent paid to Jersey Harbours.
We urge States Members, when they debate the closure of the gallery on 21 September, to agree to make a grant to Jersey Heritage to enable the gallery to remain open for all time for the people of Jersey and visitors alike as was envisaged when the tapestry was first commissioned.
