Zane Duquemin topped a tremendous season on Saturday

JERSEY discus thrower Zane Duquemin has qualified for the Commonwealth Games in India next year.

With the last of his six throws and in the last event of the inter-insular athletics match at the FB Fields on Saturday the 17-year-old virtually booked his place for Delhi in 2110 with a massive 52.91m effort easily inside the qualifying distance.

As expected Guernsey, led by the efforts of Olympian Dale Garland, retained the senior men’s honours – for the 11th time in 12 years – though Jersey were clear winners of the overall trophy, with wins for the senior women, U17 girls, U15 and U13 boys and girls.

Said Duquemin afterwards: ‘It was a real relief for me,’ said Duquemin afterwards. ‘ ‘I’ve never thrown that far before so it was a bit of a shock although I knew I was capable of it. As soon as I let go I knew it would be at least 52m, so I was really chuffed.

‘It’s taken the pressure off me and now I can go through the next season as planned.’
